Free DR Checker Alternatives: Where to Check Website Authority for Free
Compare the free ways to check a website's authority score, from Ahrefs DR to Moz DA, Semrush Authority Score and Majestic Trust Flow, and pick the option that fits your workflow.
A free DR checker answers one quick question: how strong is this website's backlink profile compared with others? Several SEO companies offer a free way to get that answer, but each one measures it with its own metric, its own link index and its own limits. Choosing the right free tool is mostly about knowing exactly what you are looking at.
This guide compares the free options worth knowing, explains what each one measures, and shows when a focused tool like DR Checker is the better fit.
What to look for in a free authority checker
Before comparing tools, decide what you need from the result:
- A clearly labelled metric. "Authority" is not one number. Ahrefs reports Domain Rating (DR), Moz reports Domain Authority (DA), Semrush reports Authority Score and Majestic reports Trust Flow. They are not interchangeable.
- Fresh data. Scores move as links are gained and lost, so check when a number was last updated.
- Workable limits. Many free tiers cap lookups or require an account.
- History, not just a snapshot. One score tells you where a site stands today; a trend tells you where it is heading.
- Comparison. Most decisions involve several domains, so it helps to see them side by side.
The free options compared
Each option below was checked on the vendor's own pages in November 2026. Free limits change often, so confirm them before you build a workflow around one.
Ahrefs Website Authority Checker
- Metric: Domain Rating (DR), on a 0–100 scale.
- What is free: the DR of any website, with no account needed.
- Limits: not published. Ahrefs says its free tools are deliberately limited.
- Also free: the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar shows DR and URL Rating with a free Ahrefs account, and the free Ahrefs plan (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives full reports for websites you own and verify.
- Best for: a quick, one-off DR check straight from the source.
Moz Free Domain Authority Checker
- Metric: Domain Authority (DA), on a 1–100 scale, plus Page Authority.
- What is free: DA, Page Authority, top pages, top linking domains and top ranking keywords, with no login.
- Limits: 3 free reports per day. Moz Link Explorer adds 10 queries per month with a free Moz account.
- Best for: teams whose reports and history are already built on Moz DA.
Semrush Website Authority Checker
- Metric: Authority Score (AS), on a 1–100 scale.
- What is free: Authority Score, backlinks, referring domains, estimated organic traffic and top competitors, with no login.
- Limits: a small daily allowance (3 checks per day when we checked). A free Semrush account adds about 10 analytics requests per day.
- Best for: a broader snapshot that mixes link and traffic signals.
Majestic
- Metric: Trust Flow and Citation Flow, each on a 0–100 scale.
- What is free: the Majestic browser plugin shows Trust Flow, Citation Flow and link counts without an account. Backlink lists need a paid plan.
- Limits: not published, and the plugin periodically asks you to complete a reCAPTCHA.
- Best for: judging link quality and topical trust rather than raw link volume.
SE Ranking Website Authority Checker
- Metric: Domain Trust (DT), on a 1–100 scale, plus Page Trust.
- What is free: Domain Trust, Page Trust, referring domains, backlinks and the dofollow/nofollow split, with no sign-up.
- Limits: 5 free checks per day when we checked. The full report needs an account.
- Best for: a quick second opinion on a domain's link strength.
Where DR Checker fits
DR Checker is built for one job: checking and tracking Ahrefs Domain Rating without a paid SEO subscription.
- Free DR lookups. Enter a domain and get its Ahrefs DR, which comes from Ahrefs' public Domain Rating API. No account is needed; sign in only to save domains and track them.
- Daily history. Public domains are refreshed about once every 24 hours, so you can follow a site's DR over time instead of relying on one snapshot.
- Side-by-side comparison. The comparison page puts several domains' DR trends on one chart.
- Leaderboards. Browse the global Top 100 websites by Domain Rating and the fastest-rising domains DR Checker tracks.
It is not a full backlink research suite. You will not see individual backlinks, anchor text or traffic estimates there. If you need those, the paid plans of the larger SEO platforms are the right tools.
How to compare domains fairly
Whichever free tool you use, a few rules keep the numbers meaningful:
- Stick to one metric. Compare DR with DR or DA with DA. Never average scores from different providers.
- Check on the same day. Link indexes update continuously, so compare domains measured at the same time.
- Compare relevant sites. Benchmark against real competitors in your market, not against the biggest sites on the web.
- Watch the trend. A steady climb usually says more than a single jump.
- Look beyond the score. Relevance, editorial quality and real traffic still decide whether a link or partnership is worth pursuing.

Which free option should you use?
- One quick DR check for a single site: Ahrefs' Website Authority Checker or DR Checker.
- Tracking DR over weeks and comparing competitors: DR Checker, which keeps daily history and side-by-side charts.
- Reports built on Moz DA: Moz's free Domain Authority checker, within its daily limit.
- A wider snapshot with traffic estimates: Semrush's free checker or a free Semrush account.
- Link quality signals: Majestic's Trust Flow.
The bottom line
There is no single best free authority checker. Choose by metric first, then by limits and features. If Ahrefs DR is the metric you report on and you want history and comparisons without a subscription, check a domain on DR Checker and compare it with your competitors.
